Aria Cortes

Hello my butterflies, I’m Aria.  I was born and raised in New York and I am a country singer. I know what you’re thinking now, “A country singer from New York?” Well, to answer that, yes. First, let me start off by saying that I LOVE seeing NASH FM 94.7 broadcasting country music from NY, because it's just broadening horizons, especially for an artist like me. But as for my reason for wanting to be a country singer, I listen to a lot of different music. From mainstream pop to 80's rock to Latin music to yes, country. And as I grew up and started getting closer to making my dreams a reality, I realized that I had to figure out what kind of artist I wanted to be. I thought about it and realized that the main thing I wanted to be as an artist was genuine. I didn't want to dress up in crazy costumes or do anything that I wasn't comfortable with to fit in with what other artists were doing. I just wanted to be me and make music. So this is why I'm a country singer. I always felt that country music was so genuine, regardless of the subject matter. Plus, I have a huge sweet spot for the sounds of country music. I play mandolin and am learning the banjo! I also remember watching John Rich’s show “Gone Country” growing up (man I loved that show!) and I remember him saying to Julio Iglesias Jr. that he was looking for someone who could bridge the gap between country fans and Latin fans. I thought that since I’m Hispanic, maybe I could be that bridge.

Recently I came to another realization about the type of artist I want to be. In 2013, I went to a Christian music festival and left it so hugely inspired. So inspired that I decided that night that I wanted to share my faith in my music. Which goes back to why I wanted to do country music in the first place: to show who I am, and my faith is a big part of who I am. I also realized that faith-based lyrics were (and still are) kind of lacking in today's country music and that inspired me even more. This is also why Carrie Underwood is my biggest musical influence and personal role model, because she doesn't shy away from bringing faith-based lyrics to country music either.

So now that you know a bit about my music,  let me tell you about me personally. I’m a huge music lover. I listen to music any chance I get. I also find that when I’m feeling down, the best way to cheer myself up is by listening to music. Some of my favorite artists/bands are Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, The Band Perry, LeAnn Rimes, Keith Urban, Hunter Hayes, Jamie Grace, Moriah Peters, Paramore, Love and the Outcome, Tenth Avenue North, Veridia to name just a few. Each of these artists inspires me in a different way, from incredible songwriting, to confidence on stage, to the emotion behind each word. As I mentioned above, I'm also a huge fan of 80's rock (thanks dad!) and some of my favorites are Poison, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Skid Row, and Firehouse.

Another thing about me is that I’m a big nerd. I loved school (especially math) and I love to read.  Maybe it’s because, when you think about it, music and books are really similar. Both let you get into a different character. When you read or listen to music, you kind of forget your problems and escape into the words and story. I read a lot of YA fiction and my favorite genres are dystopian and chick-lit (isn't it funny how sometimes those even go hand in hand?). My favorite series are Harry Potter (forever!), Hunger Games, Vladimir Tod, Maze Runner and Divergent.

I love to write, as you can probably tell by this long introduction.  From poems, to songs, to stories, I’ve always loved writing. I think I’d be an author if I wasn’t a singer. What I love about writing is that you can write about literally anything. It can be from your experience, a friend’s experience, a dream, really anything. I feel it’s probably the best way to express yourself.

I also love sports. No, correction, I love watching sports. I've found that I'm actually pretty athletic, but I stink when it comes to playing sports. My favorite sports to watch are baseball, NASCAR, Pro Wrestling (WWE) and MMA. I also watch football sometimes. My favorite baseball team is the New York Mets, even though I’m from the Bronx. My favorite NASCAR drivers are Kyle Busch, Danica Patrick, and Carl Edwards. My favorite WWE wrestlers are Randy Orton, Seth Rollins and Sasha Banks.

My debut album called “Daydreaming” was released in late 2011. I worked on it for about a year. That was a year of hard work and tons of fun. Random fun fact about that album is that I finished recording it on my birthday! I'm still so incredibly excited that you all can hear my music! I feel that every song on that album represented who I was very well, not only as an artist but as a person too. I also wrote two of the songs on the album. I’m glad that you all got a glimpse of my writing on that album, because I've written so much more for this album.

Which brings me to this album. I released my 2nd album "chrysalis" in June 2016. I'm so excited for you all to hear this new music and hear how much I've grown, both as an artist and as a person. I'm also excited for you to hear the new things that are being incorporated. Different sounds, different themes, different type of lyrics.

As you know, I like to call my fans my butterflies. I’d like to tell you why. There’s a song on my first album called “Butterfly.” It’s a song about spreading love and happiness around you. I call my fans my butterflies because you all spread love and support to me and together, we can pay it forward to spread love and happiness everywhere we go. Now, whenever I wear a butterfly (which is often), it makes me think of you all and how much you've supported me. So just know that whenever you see me wearing a butterfly, it's for you and I'm thinking of you!

I would to just like to end this by saying thanks to you all. Thanks for reading this. Thanks for supporting me. Thanks for following me as I live out my dream. Thanks for being a butterfly. Just thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope you’ve learned more about me and I look forward to seeing and meeting you all when I perform, which will be happening very soon!! Again thank you so much!
